At CrewFO, our Yacht Crew Tax Planning advice helps yacht crew understand their tax obligations, make the most of their income and plan for their financial future. The following case studies demonstrate how our specialist advice has helped clients manage their tax affairs, build wealth and prepare for life beyond yachting.
Yacht Crew Tax Planning: Monica’s Journey
Monica first attended one of our talks at UKSA while undertaking STCW training.
Prior to this, she was unaware that as a UK resident yacht crew member she had to file tax returns. The talk also helped Monica realise the unique financial position seafarers are in. It also highlighted the importance of specialist Yacht Crew Tax Planning.
After the talk, Monica signed up as a CrewFO member. We assisted her with her tax obligations. This included ensuring she was compliant with Seafarers Earnings Deduction (SED) and fully up to date with her tax returns.
By this point, Monica expressed a desire to leave yachting in the future. She was looking for a more balanced lifestyle.
Building a Financial Plan
As part of this plan, we encouraged Monica to save and invest as much of her yachting income as possible. This helped create a decent buffer when returning to land.
This took two main forms:
- Investment in ISAs
- Investment in rental property
Monica’s aim during this period was to utilise her full ISA allowance each year. This ISA investment provided tax-free dividend income, capital gains and interest income. This continues to accumulate and compound.
We also assisted Monica with the purchase of rental property. We used our seafarer-specialist mortgage advisors to help with this.
This rental property ensured that Monica was making use of her personal allowance while in the yachting industry. It would later serve as a form of passive income when land-based.
By the time Monica left the yachting industry, she had two rental properties. She also had enough savings for a deposit for her own home. Her ISA portfolio is still providing her with income.
In addition to the above, we also introduced Monica to our sister company, MGMT, a UK-based yacht agency. They offered her a position when she left the yachting industry. Monica has since worked her way up to becoming Director of the company.
Property Tax Planning: Adam’s Journey
We were contacted by a customer of ours who had acquired multiple properties over the years. He wished to renovate these and rent them out.
We analysed the tax impact of this decision against his current situation and future plans. It was found to be more tax-efficient for our client to hold these properties in a limited company, rather than in his personal name.
Following some frustration with his previous accountants over advice they had given, we also assisted with the process of transferring these properties into the company.
This included calculating the Stamp Duty and Capital Gains due as part of this transfer.
Due to the increase in the number of properties, as well as the numerous renovations, our client also requested our assistance with the bookkeeping for his limited company.
This assistance removed a time-consuming task from his already busy schedule.
Bookkeeping and Tax Efficiency
By undertaking the bookkeeping, we were able to review our client’s position in real time. We could then assist in maximising the tax efficiency of his operations.
One example was to create a company payroll. This allowed our client to take a salary and utilise their personal allowance in their personal name.
The salary cost could then be deducted from the company’s profits. This helped decrease the corporation tax bill.
Finally, we were also asked to handle the annual accounts submissions, corporation tax filing, and confirmation statement.
We promptly resolved all outstanding filing problems that had previously arisen. We have since ensured all filings are submitted in a timely manner.
